Rock n Flicks - "waiting for the gift of sound and vision" (David Bowie 1977)

Feels more like a broken record...

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

First it was The Bourne Identity, then they released The Bourne Supremacy and now we have been offered the third instalment; The Bourne Ultimatum. People are raving about this film, but it is hardly an ultimatum, it feels more like a saga, that never ends. Following Jason’s Bourne’s quest to discover his identity, it is basically the same story for a third time, like an Interpol record.

Although very well acted and spectacularly shot, it lacked intention in its opening and final scenes, leaving everything up to the action. The opening started sharp and fast but was then slowed down with tonnes of back story that was valuable for the people who haven’t seen the first two Bournes, but boring for those who have. Similarly, in the closing scenes when Bourne’s identity is finally revealed, there is no real wow factor and all that is spelled out is unfortunately ‘anti-climax’. Yawn.

Matt Damon is a great actor, and I didn’t mind watching him for an hour and a half but I really felt as if I had seen it all before and there were few surprises here. Julia Stiles was rather gormless; reprising her role as CIA agent Nicky Parsons and her character wasn’t really given enough scope to get the audience on her side. David Strathairn was quite convincing however as CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen - Bourne’s nemesis in the film, and he and Joan Allen had a good on screen chemistry.

The script is extremely clever in parts and extremely dull in others making for an inconsistent story that is difficult to get involved in, but if it’s action you want, then you’ve come to the right place. Sporting some of the best camera work I have ever seen, Paul Greengrass really outdoes himself here to the point where I was clutching my chair and physically shying away as cars came spinning into the camera. Sharp shots and a fast pace will keep you interested once it gets going, but the end may be a disappointment for many. It’s a wild ride but a weak plot.
