Cry Baby (1990)
Comedy/ Musical/ Wackfest
I seem to be regressing lately with films, catching up on old favourites and finally watching films I have vowed to see but have yet to make the time for. One said film is Cry Baby, written and directed by John Waters and starring Johnny Depp. And I will admit my reason for seeing this film was indeed Johnny Depp. Superficial, I know, but so is this film.
As far as bizarre goes, this film is the living end. I have never seen a more random, confused and nonsensical plot in a film (please exclude any David Lynch), and yet somehow I loved it. I felt like I knew half of the characters in it, which could just mean that I have very strange friends, but Waters’ quirky sense of humour and ability to characterize really effectively is what I think gives this film its kick and makes it seem familiar. It’s Grease on acid, with cornier acting, cheesier songs and far more sexual innuendo. It even comes with a cameo from Iggy Pop. There is no bad here.
Cry Baby follows the story of Wade “Cry Baby” Walker, a cool, young kid who falls in love with Allison Vernon-Williams, a prissy, Sandy-esque “Square” who longs to experience life from the other side of the tracks. So, I guess it’s a romance of sorts. The battle between the Drapes (cool kids) and the Squares (straight edge kids) is the subplot of this movie and makes for some interesting entertainment.
If you can’t get into art-house films or goofy pseudo-spoofs, then this film won’t be for you. I however, have a weird sense of humour and the crazy storyline, ridiculous dialogue and rich bravado from all the actors, has made it an immediate favourite of mine.
Also featuring Susan Tyrell (Ramona Ricketts), Amy Locane (Allison Vernon-Williams) and Ricki Lake (Pepper Walker), it even features ex-porn star Traci Lords as one of the Drapes.
Cry Baby should be a cult classic for those who like anything crazy, bizarre and wickedly funny.
