Day of the Dead
(Special Edition DVD)
George A. Romero is a cult figure of horror films. Famous for taking gothic myths and turning them on their heads, he carefully deconstructs our predisposed expectations and reveals unimagined perspectives. He did so notably with his 1977 pseudo-vampire flick, Martin, and he does so here, in Day of the Dead, actually humanising the zombies by revealing surprising depth in their capacity to learn, remember and feel.
Amidst all the gore, and there is plenty, we begin to feel the plight of the zombie, and the tragedy of his situation. This is enforced both by the endearing zombie character of Bud and the extensive zombie experimentation at the hands of humans that is the focus of the film. It is a ripper of a gore flick but it is also a comment on the human desire for power, control and ultimately survival.
Romero’s is a style that has been both remade and reinvented. This 2-disc Special Edition includes audio commentary with the director himself, a feature length documentary featuring Wes Craven and Sam Raimi, behind-the-scenes featurettes, trailers, TV spots and an extensive stills gallery for those who just can’t get enough gore. Cheesy, gruesome and at times, highly amusing, it is not the MTV style of horror we see so often today, but it’ll make your toes curl and the incomparable Tom Savini provides wicked make-up and Special FX.
