Gettin Square
Comedy/ Drama/ Crime/ Thriller
David Wenham. They’re really the only two words you’ll need to know regarding this film written by Chris Nyst and directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (Better Than Sex). Wenham steals the show with his character, Johnny Spiteri, the hopeless drug addict and small time criminal that is desperate to get square but is practically incapable of doing so. He is as endearing as he is hilarious and it is almost impossible to accept that this character came purely from Wenham’s imagination, then again, perhaps Wenham really is just that good.
Sam Worthington is the protagonist, another criminal who has done time for (accidental) manslaughter and who is also determined to get square now that his parole has come up. He plays the quiet and discerning Romeo of this picture and does so with an honesty and vulnerability that’s rough enough around the edges to ring true.
The writing is sharp, funny and believable, the direction; stellar. Teplitzky is one of the cleverest and most insightful directors I have seen in a while. His eye for detail, coupled with his comic timing, make this an absolute ripper of a film. I haven’t seen Better Than Sex but I’ll definitely be renting it, if only to see more of the genius that is Jonathan Teplitzky.
Robberies, money laundering, car chases, gangsters, and Spiteri’s rubber thongs make this a hilarious and action packed comedy/ drama with a truly Australian spin that runs deeper than the viewer initially realises.
Nominated for 22 awards and with 9 wins, this film runs for 100 minutes and is definitely one for the ‘Movies I should see before I die’ list. You’ll laugh you’re ass off.
