Running off with the good stuff.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Rock Cabaret
‘How did some slip of a girly boy from communist East Berlin become the internationally ignored song stylist barely standing before you?’ Well, you can find out, in Showtune’s brand spankin’ new season of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, currently baring all at the Tom Mann Theatre in Surry Hills.
Concentrating on the ‘good stuff’ from the film version and abandoning scenes that would have required a larger cast and budget, the film script has been converted to fit the Tom Mann Theatre and to appeal to an Australian audience, without losing the sharp, sassiness of the original material.
Grass roots genius and 5 time Aria winner, Iota, dons the delicious blonde wig again and reprises his role as Hedwig for this new production with the talented Saskia Smith (Yitzhak) as his partner in crime…or song. The two work extraordinarily well together on stage, and it is clear that despite the controversy surrounding transgendered roles, Iota is more than comfortable in this…er, um, position.
Saskia Smith is a virgin to her role (Yitzhak being played in 2005 by Blazey Best), and she proves she can definitely hold her own, not to mention some pretty tough notes, in this production. Both Saskia and Iota sport fantastic vocal range, stellar comic timing and strong enthusiasm for their roles, while all the while playing their roles endearingly, which makes it difficult not to fall in love with this musical.
It is without a doubt, the best rock cabaret since the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Bursting with transgendered themes, coarse and unabashed sexual humour, plenty of punk rock anthems and antics, and loads of lusty licks and larks from the illuminating Hedwig, this is a show not to be missed. Hedwig wants you to come… over and over again.
The season of Hedwig and the Angry Inch has just been extended. No excuses!
