MY DISCO
Further/ Naked on the Vague
The Annandale April 27
Naked on the Vague is a two person experimental project with a psychedelic edge. Swinging between an eerie melancholy, droning monotony, and frantic fervor, they make interesting, often dissonant sounds. Keep your eye on them; they may just do something amazing in the future.
Labeling themselves as a punk/ indie/ rock band: Further took to the stage next and offered up more indie rock than punk. The songs tended to drag rather than surging towards anything and thus had a flat, generic feel. Having surprisingly been together as a band for eight years, they’ve still got a little further to go.
My Disco is a brave band. Displaying a sound typical of 80’s Math rock (think dissonant riffs, atypical rhythms with a stop/ start nature and very weird time signatures), they push the envelope, mashing different genres of music together and delivering an end result that is aggressive, yet somehow dance worthy. It’s no wonder they have been compared to Newcastle’s: The Instant, adopting a similar minimalist, almost mechanical sound, but one that is far more aggressive than The Instant, and that clearly has a funk element.
The angular and experimental nature of their work brought Kraftwerk to mind, and the anarchic funk sensibility suggested elements of Rage Against the Machine. These guys are attempting to put a new spin on everything we know and love. The disjointed nature of their time changes was sometimes awkward but the only real elements that let My Disco down were the repetitive nature of their rhythms and the abrupt ending of all of their songs. In fact, I do believe every song ended in the same fashion – which doesn’t make for many surprises. They also left very lengthy gaps between songs, which killed any sort of momentum the songs had worked so hard to create. Naturally being a Math rock band, it’s going to sound slightly off, but My Disco are a tight band, pushing interesting formulas.
