Myspace - Cool or Kitsch?

Myspace. Everybody has one. And if they don’t have one, they know about it. And if they don’t know about it, they’ve been living under a rock or still think a Commodore 64 is the latest computer model. But is it cool or kitsch? Cool if you’re in a band and have a band page, kitsch if you have a personal page? Do you represent yourself as you really are or how you would like to be perceived by others? Are we really the sum of the bands we listen to and the amount of friends we have acquired? Probably. I don’t think I’ve ever taken Myspace seriously. It’s a bit of fun, a good way to keep in touch with friends and an opportunity to goof off every so often.
If you’re in a band, however, it’s a potential gold mine. And that’s very serious. Myspace is continuously growing, especially in the Music pages. Every band in the world knows the benefits of having a Myspace page and the ones who got in early have probably profited from it the most, before people became jaded about the whole, ‘Hey, check out my band’ request. I get about 50 of these a day and I can’t say that more than 30% of them are actually worth checking out. But at least I know they exist and that’s not bad for a little band from Russia that were only known in their native country until Myspace opened her cyber gates.
Myspace has become so popular that I’ve got friends with distant cousins from overseas requesting them as friends. I’ve got friends who are teachers frantically trying to sort out how to set their profiles to private so that their students can’t access their sordid pages. I’ve got some guy from Turkey trying to convince me he needs a lady friend when he comes to Australia and that I am the perfect candidate…No strings attached, of course.
And the whole Top 8 debacle is one of my favourites. I no longer touch the order of my top 8 in case I indirectly offend someone who is keeping a keen eye on their Top 8 tally. The order of my friends on this list is a very sensitive issue. If I swap someone or heaven forbid, remove someone from their highly sought after spot, I may as well be asking for a fight.
I don’t know if anyone ever makes any real friends on Myspace…but who needs real relationships when it’s so much easier to have cyber ones…No strings attached.
Hmm…
