Ultraviolet - Ultramediocre

So I watched Ultraviolet on the weekend. And I have to say that it was an hour and a half of my life that I wish I could get back. To be honest, I knew it had received miserable reviews and I really only saw it because Milla Jovovich was in it but I figured it would at least have a glimmer of a storyline, maybe some sort of hook to make me care about the characters and perhaps some kind of conflict or menacing threat that would increase the suspense but sadly, it failed to deliver in any of these areas.
The effects were great but the acting was fair. Of course, in my books Milla Jovovich can do no wrong but even this was a stretch for her. It was Resident Evil without the zombies or the storyline…or anything else that is required to make a film viable.
Violet (Milla Jovovich) was so good at kicking ass and being angry that I never thought for a moment that she might not win the fight, physically and emotionally. She had an unlimited amount of guns, power and precision and virtually no weaknesses to even remotely help us, the audience, to relate to her. Oh and p.s. She’s a vampire… Who knew?
At the start of the film, she claimed to hate humans but then spent the entire movie trying to save a young, human boy. There’s a fine line between character conflict and bad writing. This was the latter. Sure, they threw in the whole, this kid may hold the key to the cure for our disease thing but as far as I could tell it was a kick ass disease to have. Why would you want to get rid of it? I was like, sign me up for a dose of Haemophagea! I’d love to wear leather, ride motorcycles, kick ass all day and never lose a fight.
Once again, I’ll say I love Milla Jovovich. She’s hot. But Ultraviolet is not. If you love her too, I’d recommend waiting for Resident Evil: Afterlife. If it’s anything like Resident Evil: Apocalypse, then I can’t wait.
Ultraviolet was written and directed by Kurt Wimmer and runs for 88 minutes. But who cares, really?
