THE HISTORY OF KISS
December 3rd 2009 23:02
KISS is an iconic Rock and Roll band started in the early 1970’s by co-founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Simmons and Stanley actually came to meet a few years earlier when they first formed another New York City based band together called Wicked Lester. Under this band name, they never achieved much success and only recorded one album which ended up being shelved by their label. With that being said, Simmons and Stanley knew they needed to go down a different musical avenue….hence the new idea of KISS was born.
KISS is possibly the most recognizable band of all time. With their painted faces, five to seven inch heeled boots and unique outfits, they created quite a following early on. They also incorporated various other perks in their live performances that fans would never forget. Between the pyrotechnics, smoking guitars and Simmons breathing fire and spitting blood, they gave their fans exactly what they came for at every single show – the hottest band around – KISS!
The bands original members included Paul Stanley (StarChild), Gene Simmons (The Demon), Ace Frehley (SpaceMan) and Peter Criss (The Cat). They were almost like a group of comic book characters come to life playing rock-n-roll music. In 1982, Criss and Frehley both left stating the creative differences in the group were too great to resolve.
Simmons and Stanley stuck it out and welcomed new members into the group over the years. They even went without their trademark makeup and outfits for a few years, reinventing themselves in a sense as “Unmasked” for the fans. In the mid to late 90’s, all four original members of the band reunited once again donning full makeup and costume. This reunion lasted approximately four years until Criss and Frehley once again left to pursue their own individual careers.
Shortly after the final split of the original four, Eric Singer replaced Criss on drums and Tommy Thayer replaced Frehley on lead guitar and eventually became full-fledged permanent members. The awesome foursome continue to play together over the last several years recording and touring live, the most recent tour starting in September 2009 at the Cobo Arena in Detroit Michigan. They’ve also finally been nominated for the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame this very year. It’s about time!
