Zombie Lurch
Get your freak on.
Interview
Little did I know until now, but mass zombie marches seem to be an international epidemic. Everyone wants to smash the current world record of marching (or should I say staggering) zombies, which currently sits at around 894. Organisers of the upcoming all Australian Zombie Lurch are hoping to get at least 999 for theirs and then bask in the glory of world record fame.
So I guess the question is; would you like to be part of History in the making? Been disemboweled lately? Looking a little pale after the winter months? Naturally dark under the eyes? If the answer is yes, then The Zombie Lurch World Record Attempt is the place for you on September 22. If not, then you’ll need to get handy with the make-up brush and the acting skills because THEY WANT YOU!
But just what is a Zombie Lurch, I hear you ask? I chatted to organiser of the event; Andrew Garrick to get some answers on questions such as this and also some witty zombie humour.
“They’ve been doing them all over the shop. We think there have been about 50 of them so far, all over the world. There’s a video of them all up on our website, or at Really Long Link
And what would compel a person to initiate such an event? “Well, there’s several reasons why we’re doing it and why we want other people to. It’s freaking cool. You, and nine hundred and ninety nine of your friends getting dressed up as the undead and then walking around empty streets - as if that’s not awesome! Also, it’s an open source film. So, the general idea is that we can provide a scene of a thousand zombies to any one (for free) to use in their own 5-person zombie film which they’ve made on a handi-cam for $50. On our end, there’re three things going. First is the march, which is cool in itself. Then, there’s the fact that it’s going to be filmed by a bunch of different crews for use in an open source film. Then, we also plan to use the best of that footage in our own short film, the script of which has been written collaboratively and put up on the website all the way along.”
Forget Big Brother, this is your chance to be famous and a cult classic! I recommend a fest of B-grade zombie madness in preparation for this event; Evil Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Army of Darkness, Day of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead, Resident Evil, hell, even Michael Jackson’s Thriller is a winner – learn how to dance like a zombie!
Aside from the march, there will be a BBQ and bands in the afternoon (all-you-can eat brain Buffet still to be confirmed), and fabulous prizes to be won. Make-up counters will also be provided for last minute zombie touch ups. For more information Visit www.zombiefestival.org, and then show up at next Tuesday’s makeup workshop (5-7pm, Manning Bar, Sydney Uni). The march itself will be held on the 22nd Sept @ 10:30am, in St Andrews Oval at Sydney Uni.
Finally, what are Andrew’s tips for creating the perfect zombie? “Being dead, I suppose is the smart answer. The dumb answer would be staying alive, which is also the answer to “what is the best disco tune of 1977?” Ah, zombie humour. Head down on September 22 for good times, good bands and good gore.
